Monsoon Advances Over Mumbai as IMD Warns of Intensified Rainfall and Widespread Thunderstorm Threat Across India

The India Meteorological Department reports further advancement of the southwest monsoon into Mumbai, Maharashtra, and multiple Indian regions, with intensified rainfall forecast across eastern, northeastern, and southern states. Heavy to very heavy showers, thunderstorms, strong winds up to 80 kmph, and persistent heatwave conditions in parts of northern India are expected.

The India Meteorological Department has confirmed that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea and several regions of India, including parts of Maharashtra such as Mumbai, along with areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and Odisha. The development marks a significant progression of the seasonal system across central and eastern India.

The weather agency stated that atmospheric conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of the north Arabian Sea and Gujarat, as well as additional regions of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh over the next two to three days. This signals a continued strengthening of monsoon activity across multiple regions of the country.

According to the forecast, rainfall activity is expected to intensify over large parts of eastern, northeastern, and southern India in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department has predicted widespread rainfall over Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Telangana, and adjoining regions of southern India, with certain areas likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers, raising concerns over localized flooding and disruption.

The northeastern region is expected to remain the wettest part of the country, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Persistent intense rainfall activity is forecast to continue across these states under strong monsoon influence.

Across several states, widespread thunderstorm activity is also anticipated. Reports indicate that large parts of northern, central, and eastern India may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 kilometers per hour in some areas. These conditions raise the risk of localized damage and potential disruptions to transport and daily activities, with intermittent storm activity expected to continue over the coming days.

Despite the advancement of the monsoon, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in parts of East Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha. The delayed progression of the monsoon in certain central regions continues to sustain hot and dry weather conditions, prompting ongoing heat-related advisories from weather authorities.

The evolving weather pattern highlights a complex transition phase across the country, where advancing monsoon systems, intense rainfall zones, and persistent heatwave pockets are coexisting, creating significant variability in weather conditions across India.
